GUIDE

Disappearing messages: a retention control, not a time machine.

Expiry is useful when you want less persistence. It is not a guarantee that information ceases to exist everywhere at the exact moment a timer ends.

What disappearing means

A disappearing-message feature gives the application a lifecycle rule for supported messages. After the configured period, the system can remove or stop serving the message according to its implementation.

What it cannot undo

If a recipient has copied the message, photographed the screen or otherwise preserved it, application-level expiry cannot reverse that copy.

Why it is still useful

Reducing default retention can reduce the amount of information left in the normal application lifecycle. That is useful for temporary coordination and sensitive logistics.

Choosing an expiry

  • Short window for one-off logistics.
  • Longer window when action takes time.
  • Use expiry as a retention control, not as a replacement for careful sharing.
  • Verify recipients before sending sensitive information.
